The Barnet Eye Advent Calendar - Wednesday 3rd December - A guest post from Dr Julia Hines

Today is day three of the Barnet Eye Advent Calendar. This series will run every day until Xmas day. We are reclaiming the concept of giving from the consumerist society. We will give you a little snippet of our love for our neighbourhood and we'll also feature a link to a great local charity, So if you are inspired, you can do your bit and make this festive season a little better for someone who may just appreciate some help. - Today we have a guest post from Dr Julia Hines of Age UK Barnet and we focus on Finchley.

My hidden gem in East Finchley has to be Cherry Tree Woods – a small park off Fortis Green - which as originally part of the hunting grounds of the Bishops of London, granted to them in the 12th Century by Henry II.

The woods are mainly deciduous – with blossom trees and hornbeams. They are also home to the Cherry Tree Woods Festival each Summer; a must attend for locals, with local businesses, charities and bands coming together in a real community atmosphere.

The Fair is organised by the East Finchley Community Trust, which also organises the Christmas Festival which will be on this Saturday, along the high road. There will be music, a mince pie bake off, a dog show (including most festive dog and dog which looks most like its owner), a street market, live reindeer and a Santa’s Grotto.

That is our gem, we'd also really like you to support the Age UK Barnet Xmas Secret Postcard Sale.

The Age UK Barnet Secret Postcard Sale is on 6 Dec in Passobello 174 High Rd, East Finchley N2 9AS from 10am -5pm.

At the north end of the High Road, in a carpet shop called Passobello, you will find the Age UK Barnet Secret Postcard Sale. Hundreds of original artworks have been donated – drawings, paintings, collages, prints and photographs, from artists ranging in age from 3 to 92. The secret is that you do not find out who the artist is until you have made your purchase.

All the cards are sold for the same price, £20, so it is partly an art sale, because you buy an image you love, and partly a raffle, because you may spot a card by a well-known artist or celebrity.

Some of the artists to look for are Axel Scheffler (illustrator of the Gruffalo), Carrie Reichardt (currently exhibiting in the V&A and the Ink’d Gallery in Brighton), Ben Jennings (winner of Political Cartoonist of the Year 2011), Magnus Irvin, Bettina Schroeder, Mari I’Anson, Davina McCall and Richard Lumsden.
